CORESTA RECOMMENDED METHOD No. 81
ROUTINE ANALYTICAL MACHINE FOR E-CIGARETTE AEROSOL GENERATION AND COLLECTION
The given method provides the requirements for generation and collection of an e-cigarette aerosol necessary for carrying out analytical testing. Apart from defining technical specifications of a routine analytical machine for testing electronic devices, it specifies testing parameters and standards required for generation and collection of the e-cigarette aerosol. Moreover, the recommended analytical testing method contains definitions of the notions operated while performing corresponding tests.
The method recommends setting the following standard conditions and parameters when testing devices:
- Pressure Drop - not exceeding 300 Pa, meaning the flow path offers the least possible resistance;
- Puff Duration - 3 seconds (+/- 0.1 s);
- Puff Volume - 55 ml (+/- 0.3 ml);
- Puff Frequency (duration of a pause between puffs) - 30 seconds (+/- 0.5 s), i.e. 2 puffs/minute;
- Puff Profile - rectangular shape, measured at the port of the machine with a pressure drop device of 1000 Pa (+/-50 Pa). The maximum flow rate shall be 18,5 ml/s ± 1 ml/s. The volume values V1 + V3 of the increasing and decreasing parts of the profile shown in the figure below shall not exceed 10% of the total puff volume V1 + V2 + V3.
Puff profile (idealized)
- Puff Count - the number of puffs provided by the tested device must be calculated.
Apart from requirements to the standards and parameters set during testing, CORESTA RECOMMENDED METHOD No. 81 defines the requirements to the routine analytical vaping machine itself.
According to the recommendations, a routine analytical vaping machine shall:
- possess the mechanical and electrical reliability necessary to comply with all standard conditions listed above;
- comprise units to control the puff volume, duration and frequency;
- be capable of sufficient compensation, i.e. able to maintain constant puff volumes and puff profiles when the pressure drop at the port changes;
- be capable of taking one or more cleaning puffs after termination of the aerosol generation and collection process;
- be equipped with a separate puff counter at each connection port;
- be equipped with a leakage-proof device holder;
- contain a filter trap inserted between the suction source and the e-cigarette for collecting aerosol;
- have an additional activation mechanism for e-cigarettes activated otherwise than by drawing the first puff;
- be capable of interrupting the aerosol generation and collection process after a pre-defined number of puffs.
Hokord Multichannel Vaping Complex is completely compliant with the requirements described in the recommendations and is operated through a user-friendly and simple WEB interface, providing the possibility to connect to any device to operate the parameters and work with data.
