ROUTINE ANALYTICAL CIGARETTE-SMOKING MACHINE

The mentioned international standard is prepared collectively by the technical committees which are member bodies of the worldwide federation of national standards, known as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), international governmental/non-governmental organizations and IEC bodies (the International Electrotechnical Commission).

The document defines a list of international standards applicable in carrying out tests using a routine analytical machine for smoking traditional cigarettes. It also recommends parameters and standard conditions which must be observed when smoking cigarettes with the help of a laboratory smoking machine and requirements for a smoking machine itself to be able to adapt to the defined testing conditions.

The standard conditions for smoking cigarettes with the help of a routine analytical smoking machine are as follow:

    • Pressure Drop – not exceeding 300 Pa, meaning the flow path offers the least possible resistance;
    • Puff Duration – 2 seconds (+/- 0.2 s);
    • Puff Volume – 35 cm3 (+/- 0.3 cm3);
    • Puff Frequency (duration of a pause between puffs) – 60 seconds (+/- 0.5 s);
    • Puff Profile – shall be determined with a resistance of 1 x (1 +/-5%) kPa and be in the shape of a bell, and set at the maximum flow rate from 0,8 s to 1.2 s from the start of the puff;

      • Puff Number – each individual puff shall be counted, so shall be the total number of puffs, calculated to the nearest 0.1 puff, based on the duration of the puff;
      • Testing temperature – 22 C (+/- 2C);
      • Relative testing humidity – 60% (+/- 5%).

      According to the international standard, a smoking machine shall:

        • possess the mechanical and electrical reliability necessary to comply with all standard conditions listed above;
        • comprise units to control the puff volume, duration and frequency;
        • be capable of sufficient compensation, i.e. able to maintain constant puff volumes and puff profiles when the pressure drop at the port changes;
        • ensure restricted smoking, i.e. the end of a cigarette inserted in a holder shall not come in contact with the atmosphere;
        • have standard holder design capable of gripping 9.0 mm of a cigarette with a gripping range of 8.0 to 9.5 mm, and be impervious to both smoke components and air. The holder must have a labyrinth seal with dimensions corresponding to the diameter of a tested cigarette;
        • have standard holder design to avoid impact of a tested cigarette on another cigarette;
        • be equipped with an ashtray located in a horizontal plane in 20-60 mm below the tested cigarette;
        • be equipped with a cigarette holder and a smoke trap;
        • preferably be equipped with a transparent smoking chamber. The chamber must have a mechanism for adjusting the speed of extracting the side stream of smoke. Otherwise, testing shall be performed under a fume hood.
